Sweet Itch in Horses
Sweet itch is an extremely irritating condition in horses/ponies, often caused by a reaction to midge bites. During the season midges are around, the horse/pony will rub constantly, starting off making bald patches, which if left unattended will continue to be rubbed until they bleed. This is normally in the mane, tail and underbelly areas, but can occur anywhere on a horse/pony suffering with sweet itch.
Sweet itch may also be stress related. In these cases it is best not to put the horse/pony through the stress of being shut in a stable. If it is not possible for the horse/pony to live out 24/7, then spending as little time in a stable would help. For the ones that are stressed, why not try our calming cream?
